The vegans at risk of heart disease, study shows

A study conducted by researchers in Hangzhou, China, shows that the vegan lifestyle can increase the risk of blood clots and hardening of the arteries that can cause heart attacks and strokes.

The study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, reveals that the vegans tend to have blood levels of homocysteine and decreased levels of HDL (good cholesterol), which can increase the risk of heart disease. Homocysteine is an amino acid associated with coronary heart disease risk. The study was conducted based on review of dozens of articles published in biochemistry vegetarian for 30 years.

Vegan diets who do not consume meat, eggs, milk and cheese will cause the vegans lack the essential nutrients the body needs such as iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids. Nutrients that are not available in the body can make the body at risk for heart disease.

The researchers recommend the vegan or vegetarian to always keep the intake of nutrients that the body needs both from natural food sources and nutritional supplements in addition to meat. Omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon and nuts are beneficial to prevent abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia) and slow the rate of plaque buildup and lower blood pressure.
